The Commission on Streamlining Government has recommended consolidating and closing developmental centers. See all of the Commission’s recommendations here. The following recommendations made by the Commission would impact the system-serving people with developmental disabilities.
- Privatize Centers: Transfer residents to private centers or transition them to community-based services and consolidate state-run centers
- LaCAN is grateful for and fully supports the recommendation to consolidate and close developmental centers.
- Privatize DHH community homes, independent living clients, and extended family living clients
- LaCAN fully supports this recommendation.
- State Land Use
- This recommendation directing the Division of Administration to achieve the highest and best use of state owned property will be critical when the state closes developmental centers and seeks to sell the land. Proceeds from the sale of developmental centers are required to remain in the budget of the Office for Citizens with Developmental Disabilities (see Act 555 of 2006)
- Abolish Special Funds
- The New Opportunities Waiver (NOW) Trust Fund enacted through Act 481 of 2007 creates a source of funds for the purpose of adding additional waiver slots. Please respond to future action alerts that will oppose this recommendation and seek to preserve the NOW Trust Fund.
